MOULTONBOROUGH — Kids in Moultonborough will have the chance to participate in a new kind of cardboard box sled derby, sharing their creations from their own backyards virtually before bringing them to community sledding party in February.

The Moultonborough Recreation Department and Castle in the Clouds are working together to bring the Virtual Sled Derby to life followed by a sledding party on Feb. 2.

Families are invited to submit videos and photos of kids with their cardboard box sleds for the virtual derby with a deadline of Wednesday, Jan. 23. Kids are encouraged to create their own sleds from cardboard and decorate them how they want. When their sleds are done the kids are invited to ride them down their favorite hill with someone taking a video, then submit their video. The videos will be judged by a "team of sled experts" who will choose winners in a number of categories.

Entrants are required to fill out and submit an entry form. Each submission can have up to four participants, the different groups will be classed as ages 12 and under or 13 and up according to the oldest participant.

A full list of rules is available at www.moultonboroughnh.gov/recreation-department or at www.castleintheclouds.org.

Entries must be submitted to dtatro@moultonboroughnh.gov or programs@castleintheclouds.org by Jan. 23.

The contest will conclude on Feb. 2 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. with a sledding party at Castle in the Clouds by the Meadows at Shannon Pond. Kids are invited to bring their cardboard box sleds for an afternoon of sledding. Afterwards participants can come to the Carriage House to watch a presentation of the entries with ribbons being handed out for the virtual derby. There will also be light refreshments.

If there is no snow for the Feb. 2 event, the indoor events will still go on as planned. In case of inclement weather there will be a "blizzard date" announced.
