MEREDITH — The Inter-Lakes School Board gave special recognitions to two students who received prestigious awards for their work.

On Tuesday, the board recognized the accomplishments of ILHS seniors Jackson Williams, who received the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce's Hero Award, and Matthew Sundius, who attained the rank of Eagle Scout.

Williams received the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce's Hero Award during a recent awards presentation. He was nominated by his teacher and Interact adviser Laura Brusseau. During the meeting Brusseau outlined Williams' achievements.

"Over the years, I have seen Jack grow from a shy and timid freshmen to one of the most respected young men in the school," Brusseau said. "Jack has a great deal of integrity and character."

Brusseau said Williams was instrumental in forming the Interact Club, a student organization sponsored by the Rotary. He started as treasurer and now serves as president.

"Jack is an outstanding leader and motivator," Brusseau said. "One thing that I really respect about Jack is he doesn't talk about change he is the change! Jack is at every volunteer event; he is always the first to arrive for set up and the last to leave. He leaves no details unanswered from contacting local media before an event to hand written thank you cards after an event."

Interact has undertaken a number of community projects including collecting 2,000 pairs of socks for local shelters, working at spring clean ups, donating to the Wheelchair Foundation as well as local efforts such as Inter-Lakes Got Lunch and the Inter-Lakes Student in Need fund among many others.

Williams will attend George Washington University in Washington, D.C. with a major in History and minors in LGBT Studies and Political Science.

Matthew Sundius recently received the rank of Eagle Scout. Guidance Director Christina Gribben wrote a letter to the board describing Sundius' achievements.

Sundius is a member of Boy Scout Troop 55. His project was to build a welcoming sign outside St. Charles Borromeo Church. Gribben wrote that the project is complete except for a lighting system that will be installed this month.

"It was a very large project to take on, and Matthew shares he couldn't have done it without the help of Omni signs, Mike Browher of Browher Construction Company, and the St. Charles Church Staff," Gribben wrote. "He is very proud that he completed the rank of Eagle Scout and is now a member of this prestigious group in the Boy Scout community."

Sundius is also a member of National Honor Society, and is a New Hampshire Scholar. Gribben said he makes honor roll level grades and takes on rigorous courses, especially with an interest in science and math.

Sundius plans to attend Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Penn., majoring in Graphic Arts.

Scout Master Steve Sundius said there is another Eagle Scout in the troop: Scott Henderson, a student at Newfound Regional High School. There are four members of his troop working on their Eagle badges.

"We're very proud of the young men in our troop, they're working very hard to make things better in the world," Steve Sundius said.

Brusseau thanked the board for honoring both students.

"I am a firm believer that not only do we need students that are critical thinkers and effective communicators but we need students that are compassionate, that speak up for the voiceless, and students that see a problem and instead of talking about it they take action," Brusseau said.

Gribben also praised both Sundius and Williams' achievements.

"I can't tell you how prod I am for who they are and what they represent," Gribben said.
