COLEBROOK — Just around dinner time on Nov. 24, a truck crashed into the Colebrook Elementary School. Police say the pickup truck was parked in a garage on Colby Street and went into reverse instead of drive.

The truck plowed through the back of the garage, flew down a hill and hit the school. Fortunately, no one was injured. The classroom the truck ran into suffered significant damage.

Colebrook Police Chief Paul Rella said, "Right now, the crash is still under investigation but we don't anticipate any charges being filed. What we're dealing with is an elderly operator, so we're trying to figure out how it happened. The responding officer is still working on his report."

The driver has been identified as 76-year-old Elaine Gray of Colby Street.

"We don't think there was a mechanical issue, as she was driving a 2021 F150," added Rella.

Rella relayed that there are more issues with elderly drivers than most realize, adding "There's all kinds of different provisions that we have. If we feel that there's an elderly driver that needs to be tested. Again, we can do a letter to the Department of Licensing and they'll schedule that person to be actually road tested again. We don't want to take anybody's license away, but if they're unsafe and that needs to be looked at, then we need to think about the safety of the general public."

Had school been in session during the accident, several students could have been tragically injured.

"This is just a bizarre thing that happened in a flash. I'm sure, as we look into this more, there will be discussions on how to possibly protect the classrooms in the future," said the Chief.
